So you are a storied D-1 football program that has gone 10-15 over the past two seasons under a head coach who won three titles as a coordinator in the NFL and rumors are the head coach may get bought out of the remainder of his contract, who do you bring in?
How about a snarly head coach recently canned by an NFL team and who has a reputation of not being able to work with and subsequently develop young quarterbacks. Sound like a good idea?
Regardless, those are the rumors that are swirling around South Bend as folks have fallen off the Charlie Weis bandwagon and may be hitching onto the Jon Gruden wagon.
But is this a good idea or just another attempt by a once storied program to stir up a buzz with a big name hire? How could Gruden have any more patience working with 18,19 and 20 year olds if he could not muster the patience to work with guys in their mid 20s?
No one doubts Gruden is a great football mind, but he does realize he cannot go out and sign a Jeff Garcia or Rich Gannon should Jimmy Clausen falter? Good luck and God bless Jimmy should these rumors come to fruition.
