Hit Like a Girl-In Response To Sally Jenkins (aka The Trouble With Tebow)
Disclaimer: This article is in response to an article Sally Jenkins from The Washington Post wrote this past week. It does not necessarily represent the views, thoughts, and opinions of everyone at CMSB Media, Atlantic Coast Radio or our sponsors. It is, however, a compelling read and a great point of debate. If you have any comments or counter-points to make, please e-mail us at editor@cmsbmedia.com.
So I’m going to write about this pro-choice woman, Sally Jenkins, and her article about Tim Tebow being a wonderful source of splendor and light for standing up for what he believes in. Which is fine. Good for you Tebow. You’re a virgin, you’re perfect, you don’t like abortion, your mom didn’t abort you, it’s all very beautiful and happy.
Unfortunately, my brain is clogged with various chemicals and cold remedies and a brain that seems determined to try and rip itself from my skull so that it may be FREE! Point being, this is not going to sound as intelligent as it should, but since I’m a glutton for punishment, I’m going to write it anyway. Thank you, Internet. You may now enjoy a cold medicine-induced rant.
Sally Jenkins, the writer of the above linked article, has great points about the ad in question. I even agree with a lot of what she’s saying, but that’s not what you’re here for, is it?
Let’s start with her cute little nicknames for the National Organization for Women (NOW).
• Dwindling Organizations of Ladies in Lockstep
• National Organization of Fewer and Fewer Women All The Time
• The National Organization for Women Who Only Think Like Us
Jenkins, you are so clever I almost fell out of my chair! Listen, everyone knows that organizations with a focus on feminism can be out of their minds, but so can organizations that are focused on the family (aka abortion is a sin punishable in a hell that doesn’t exist) such as Focus on the Family, the group paying for the Tebow Superbowl ad. So why don’t they get any of your clever names?
Here’s what confuses me most about this article. Sally Jenkins says she is pro-choice. Great, so am I, but I could never in my right mind defend an ad from an organization like Focus on the Family. My irritation has nothing to do with CBS (ok, well maybe a little), Janet Jackson (she ruined the Superbowl), or the Tebow family. Let me tell you a little but about Focus on the Family. It sounds like a nice little organization, doesn’t it? Focus on the Family. Yeah! That’s right (Insert a Jersey Shore "Fist-Pump" here)! America needs to put more focus on their families! I totally agree with that. Except that Focus on the Family is aggressively anti-abortion. They’re the kind of people you see standing outside of abortion clinics. They are anti-LGBT (don’t believe me? Check this out). They offer counseling for “unwanted” same-sex attractions (because it’s important to be ashamed of who you love), and their stance on Pro Gay Theology is that it “violates God's intentional design for gender and sexuality.” Oh, also, “Focus on the Family is dedicated to defending the honor, dignity and value of the two sexes as created in God's image – intentionally male and female – each bringing unique and complementary qualities to sexuality and relationships.”
Excuse me, I just threw up in rage.
The Tebow ad is supposedly about his mother’s choice not to abort a high-risk pregnancy. You know what I think of that? I think that’s wonderful because every woman should be able to choose what is right for her. What is not wonderful is the organization that this commercial is aligning itself with.
To address Jenkin’s conclusion:
“Tebow's ad, by the way, never mentions abortion; like the player himself, it's apparently soft-spoken. It simply has the theme "Celebrate Family, Celebrate Life." This is what NOW has labeled "extraordinarily offensive and demeaning." But if there is anything demeaning here, it's coming from NOW, via the suggestion that these aren't real questions, and that we as a Super Bowl audience are too stupid or too disinterested to handle them on game day.”
Tebow’s ad doesn’t mention abortion and the theme “Celebrate Family, Celebrate Life” sounds as wonderful as the organization that is backing it. Does the ad have a happy, sugarcoated, lovely message? Absolutely. However, underneath this nicely wrapped package is an organization that promotes intolerance, hate, and bigotry. And by the way, they only want you to make your own choices like Pam Tebow if it doesn’t involve a homosexual relationship or an abortion.
