#Pirates Beat Monarchs in Shoot-out

Nathan Gerbe and Mark Mancari scored shootout goals in support of four shootout saves by J.P. Lamoureux to lead the Portland Pirates to a 4-3 win over the Manchester Monarchs in an American Hockey League game played tonight in front of 5,642 at the Verizon Wireless Arena.

Paul Byron, Tyler Ennis (who also registered an assist) and Mancari scored in regulation for the Pirates, who posted their second straight shootout victory to improve to 38-22-5-4 on the season. The Pirates never led in the game as they battled back from three one-goal deficits.

Bud Holloway, Viatcheslav Voynov and Dwight King scored for the Monarchs, who dropped their fifth straight (0-3-1-1) to sink to 34-25-3-6 on the campaign.
All the first period scoring came in a span of four minutes in the second half of the period. Holloway began the outburst only to be matched shortly thereafter by Byron’s goal to even things at one. However, 25 seconds later Voynov restored the Monarchs one goal advantage to complete scoring in the first. Ennis scored the only goal of the period to lift the Pirates into a 2-2 tie at the end of two. King put the Monarchs back up by one in the opening minute of the third but the Pirates answered for the third time in the game as Mancari tied things midway through the period to set up overtime and eventually the shootout.

The Pirates out shot the Monarchs 28-22 in the game.

The Allied Home Mortgage Three Stars of the Game were 1. Mancari, 2. Voynov and 3. Ennis.

The Pirates return to action tomorrow (Saturday) night at 7 p.m. when they travel to Lowell to take on the Devils. The game can be heard live on News Talk WLOB 95.5 FM and on line at www.portlandpirates.com beginning with the pre-game show at 6:45 p.m.
