The Boston Red Sox today recalled left-handed pitcher Fabio Castro from Triple-A Pawtucket. Right-handed pitcher Scott Atchison was optioned to Pawtucket following last night’s game. Castro will be active for tonight’s game at Toronto and will wear No. 55.
The announcement was made by Executive Vice President/General Manager Theo Epstein.
Castro, 25, has made three starts for the PawSox this year, going 0-1 with an 8.10 ERA (9 ER/10.0 IP), 13 strikeouts and eight walks. He is in his first season in the Red Sox organization after signing as a free agent in December. He split the 2009 campaign between Toronto’s Double-A New Hampshire and Triple-A Las Vegas affiliates, combining to go 9-6 with a 4.01 ERA (73 ER/164.0 IP) in 29 starts. The left-hander last appeared in the Majors for Philadelphia in 2007 and is 0-1 with a 3.30 ERA (16 ER/43.2 IP) in 30 career games (one start) for the Rangers (2006) and Phillies (2006-07).
Atchison, 34, has appeared in seven games for Boston this season, going 0-1 with a 6.10 ERA (7 ER/10.1 IP), nine strikeouts and four walks. He is in his first Major League season since 2007 after pitching for the Hanshin Tigers of Japan’s Central League from 2008-09 where he compiled a 12-9 record and 2.77 ERA (60 ER/194.2 IP) in 117 relief outings. He is 2-4 with a 4.37 ERA (38 ER/78.1 IP) in 60 career Big League games for Seattle (2004-05), San Francisco (2007) and Boston (2010).
