The University of Maine baseball team dropped a 4-1 decision to Hartford on Sunday afternoon in the third and final game of its weekend series. Joey Martin (Portland, Maine) belted a home run for the Black Bears in the game. Maine falls to 12-20 on the season with the loss and 3-4 in America East play. Hartford improves to 3-25-1 on the season and 1-5 in conference play.
Maine jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning when Martin homered to right field. It was the second home run of the season for Martin.
Hartford took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Simon Kudernatsch tripled to right center field and Ryan Lukach followed and drew a walked. Both runners scored when Chris Suchy doubled to left center.
The Hawks added to their lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. Kudernatsch belted his second triple of the game and scored when Lukach hit a sacrifice fly. Hartford made it a 4-1 final with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Alex Bulger reached and advanced to second on an error. He scored when Victor Santana singled up the middle.
A.J. Bazdanes (Nashua, N.H.) started the game on the mound for the Black Bears. He allowed three runs on four hits over six innings while striking out six. He falls to 1-4 on the season. Stephen Perakslis (Abington, Mass.) pitched the final two innings for Maine. He allowed one run on a pair of hits.
Anthony Mannuccia pitched the complete game for Hartford. He allowed just one run on eight hits while striking out four. He improves to 2-4 on the season.
The Black Bears return to action on Tuesday, April 19 when they host Colby at 5 PM.
