Softball: Bowdoin Reaches Twenty Wins With Sweep of UNE

Bowdoin pitchers Melissa DellaTorre and Tricia Thibodeau tossed back-to-back shutouts as the Polar Bear softball team swept a doubleheader from the University of New England on Tuesday afternoon, 1-0 and 8-0. The wins push Bowdoin (20-15) to the 20-win plateau for the fifth consecutive season while the Nor'easters fall to 23-15 with the losses.

DellaTorre (8-4) scattered six hits and struck out ten in the opener before Thibodeau (4-6) permitted just two hits with seven strikeouts in the nightcap.

Bowdoin got all the offense they needed in the second inning of game one as Tracy Shirey reached on an error with one out. After advancing to second on a wild pitch, Shirey moved to third on a groundout by Hillary Smyth and came home on another wild pitch to give the Polar Bears a 1-0 lead.

DellaTorre retired nine of ten batters from the fourth through sixth innings before UNE mounted a late rally as pinch hitter Stephanie Podolski opened the seventh with a double to left center. Amanda Vaudreuil ripped a single to left and moved to second as the throw came to home plate, holding Podolski at third but setting the Nor'easters up with runners on second and third and none out. DellaTorre stifled the rally, getting Jessica Potter to pop out to first and striking out Amber Zablowsky and Maegen Johnson to close out the 1-0 win. Julie Bigelow was tagged with the tough-luck loss after throwing six innings and allowing no earned runs and just four hits. Ashley Gott had two hits for UNE while Toni DaCampo had two base hits, including a double, for the Polar Bears.

The Polar Bears cruised to a shortened eight-run rule win in game two, scoring five times in the fourth inning to put the game out of reach. Gen Barlow delivered a two-run single to cap the rally and finished 2-3 with two runs scored and two RBI. Molly Nestor had three hits and two runs scored for the Polar Bears, who also got a pair of hits from Casey Correa, who laced a walk-off single in the bottom of the sixth. Thibodeau allowed just five baserunners over six innings while Erin Lyons took the loss by allowing two earned runs and six hits over 3.1 innings.

Bowdoin will return to action Wednesday night with a home doubleheader against Husson at 3:30. Last Saturday's rained out contest with Bates has been rescheduled for Thursday evening at 5:00 p.m. at Pickard Field. UNE will return to action with a home doubleheader Wednesday against Roger Williams.
