Baseball: UMaine gets weekend sweep

Justin Leisenheimer (Middle Village, N.Y.) belted a home run in each game of a doubleheader as the University of Maine baseball team completed its weekend sweep of UMBC on Sunday. The Black Bears, who have now won seven of their last eight games, won the first game 6-1 and took the second one 3-2. Maine improves to 19-21 on the season and 9-5 in America East play. UMBC falls to 6-30 overall and 0-13 in league play.

In the first game, Maine took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. Troy Black (Mississauga, Ontario) reached on a bunt single and scored when Taylor Lewis (Montville, Conn.) doubled to left center field. Lewis scored when Michael Fransoso (Portsmouth, N.H.) doubled to left field. Tyler Patzalek (Burlington, Ontario) followed with a home run over the left field fence, giving the Black Bears a 4-0 lead. For Patzalek, it was his first home run of the season.

Justin Leienheimer led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a home run over the left field fence. For Justin, it was his second homer of the season.

UMBC got on the board with a run in the top of the fifth inning. Rick Phillips doubled to left field and scored when Casey Medairy singled to right.

Maine extended its lead in the bottom of the sixth. Alex Calbick (Burnaby, British Columbia) led off with a single to right field and Justin Leisenheimer followed with a double to right center. Calbick scored on a Colin Gay (Franklin, Mass.) sacrifice bunt.

Maine pitcher Stephen Perakslis (Abington, Mass.) went the complete game. He allowed one run on six hits while striking out four. He improves to 3-4 on the season.

Austin Drewyer went the complete game for the Retrievers. He allowed six runs on eight hits while striking out a pair. He falls to 2-7 on the season.

In the second game, Maine got on the board with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning. Justin Leisenheimer led off the inning with a double to right field. He moved to third on a sacrifice by Colin Gay and scored when Eric White (Brewer, Maine) grounded out. Mike Connolly (Middleborough, Mass.) walked and scored when Lewis tripled to center field.

UMBC scored its first run of the game in the top of the sixth inning. Rob McCabe walked and then stole second base. He scored when Rich Conlon doubled to left field.

D.J. Ream homered to lead off the top of the seventh and knot the score at 2-2.

Justin Leisenheimer led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a home run over the left center field fence to give the Black Bears the lead once again. For Leisenheimer it was his second home run of the day and third of the season and proved to be the game-winning run.

A.J. Bazdanes (Nashua, N.H.) went six innings on the mound. He allowed two runs on three hits while striking out a pair. He was replaced by Kevin Scanlan (Sudbury, Mass.) who went two innings and allowed just one hit. He struck out four batters and picks up the win, improving to 1-1 on the season. D.J Voisine (Plainville, Conn.) pitched the top of the ninth to earn his third save of the season.

Luke DiBlasi went the complete game for UMBC. He went eight innings and allowed three runs on seven hits while striking out three. He falls to 1-2 on the season.

The Black Bears return to action on Saturday, May 7 when they travel to Albany for a doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 12 noon.
