Football: 3 Black Bears get Pre-Season All-American honors


University of Maine football standouts Derek Buttles, Chris Howley and Donte Dennis have been named to the Consensus Draft Services Preseason All-American teams.

Buttles, a senior tight end from Pike, N.Y., was named to the CDS Preseason All-American Second Team. He was an All-CAA Second Team selection last season after catching 27 passes for 291 yards and a score. He was also named to the New England Football Writers All-Star Team.

Howley, a junior from Runnemede, N.J. was named a CDS Preseason All-American honorable mention. He started all 11 games at right guard for the Black Bears en route to All-CAA Third Team honors. Howley anchored an offensive line that gave up a league-low 12 sacks in 11 games while also helping the Black Bears pass for nearly 200 yards per game.

Joining Howley as an Honorable Mention was senior linebacker Donte Dennis. Dennis, from Rahway, N.J., was named to the All-CAA Third Team last year for the second-consecutive season as he led the Black Bears and rankeds ixth in the conference with 108 tackles, including 3.0 tackles-for-loss.

The Black Bears begin the season on Sept. 3 against Bryant at Alfond Stadium.
